“The Ballad of Mona Lisa” - Panic! At the Disco

(I originally posted this on my other blog, but I haven’t updated this one in a while, so I figured I’d give it some love)

I don’t watch music videos that often. Frankly, with all of the music I listen to each week, I just don’t have the time to dick around on YouTube to actually watch the vids. Which is a shame. Music videos can be an art form, and I get really excited when I see one like this.

Panic! and I don’t go way back. In fact, one of the reasons I hated pop punk in high school was specifically because of the obnoxious amount of airplay “I Write Sins Not Tragedies” was having when I would spend 10-hour shifts working at a tanning salon. When their album Pretty. Odd.came out, a lot of their fans wrote them off, but I was drawn in, only to follow with absolute adoration of “New Perspective” from the Jennifer’s Body soundtrack. Of course, by then, my music taste had shifted a bit.

Back to the music video, and why I’m taking the time to write this long spiel. I’ve been noticing since the release of “…Mona Lisa” that a lot of people have been making comparisons to A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out and this video certainly proves it. Aside from the fact that the 19th century steampunk look is certainly fitting for the twisted look that Panic! embraces with open arms, the video for TBoML is a continuation of the video for “I Write Sins…”, right down to the same church pew shot (many years later and covered in dust and cobwebs). Of course, this video contrasts the wedding theme in “Sins” to the funeral of “…Mona Lisa”, which is, you know, brilliant. Panic! has gone through so many ups and downs through the course of their career, between styles and breakups, and it’s almost unimaginable that they’re still out there, almost rising from the dead, to very shortly release their 3rd studio album, Vices & Virtues(due in stores March 22nd).

Now that Thanksgiving’s over…

Now, I for one, am not a big fan of Thanksgiving. I understand the concept, but it’s never been a big deal for me. Don’t get me wrong, I am thankful for my family and my friends and my health and blah blah blah…

When Thanksgiving’s over, that’s when it’s acceptable to start thinking about the big one: Christmas. I mean, there’s only a month left - holy shit. I don’t really believe that there’s much religious significance left in the holiday, but there’s a certain feeling about this time of year…maybe it’s because winter break is coming, which is sooooo much better!

What everyone hates the most about Christmas is the songs. “Everyone just covers every Christmas song known to man.” Well, yes, while that is true to an extent, a lot of artists have picked up on this dismay and improved their game. So, wipe that frown off your face, Scrooge! Here’s a playlist of holiday songs that you probably won’t be hearing on the radio that are sure to get you in the mood:

  1. “Mr. Winter” - The Maine, …And A Happy New Year
  2. “Making Christmas” - Danny Elfman, The Nightmare Before Christmas [Soundtrack]
  3. “Hot Chocolate” - Tom Hanks, The Polar Express [Soundtrack]
  4. “Down to Us” - Let’s Get It, ‘Tis the Season To Be Fearless [Holiday Sampler]
  5. “Christmas Tree” - Lady Gaga, Christmas Tree
  6. “Ho Ho Hopefully” - The Maine, …And A Happy New Year
  7. “Mile High Christmas” - Breathe Carolina, ‘Tis the Season To Be Fearless [Holiday Sampler]
  8. “Santa Stole My Girlfriend” - The Maine, …And A Happy New Year
  9. “Christmas Brings Me Down” - Sparks the Rescue, ‘Tis the Season To Be Fearless [Holiday Sampler]
  10.  “Ex-Miss” - Dropout Year, The Seven Levels Of The Candy Cane Forest
  11.  “Christmas And Me Are Through” - Your Vegas, Christmas And Me Are Through
  12.  “Kiss Me At Midnight” - Nsync, Home For Christmas
I couldn’t make it all Fearless Records bands after all! And I will be posting these songs once December hits, so stay tuned!

I think I just peed a little. If you haven’t heard their music/seen them live, shame on you. Make it a new year’s resolution.

Thank You

Hello Madam,

I am the Reverend Robot…a cyborg rebuilt from human flesh and given the primary directive of saving souls through music. I just wanted to thank you for “liking” my remix of Infinity Guitars by Sleigh Bells and invite you to check up / download other songs of mine at www.reverbnation.com/thereverendrobot

Thanks again and have a great day!

This Just In:

I finally streamed Cardiology, Good Charlotte’s latest album.

It’s as awesome as I thought.

Besides their single “Like It’s Her Birthday”, definitely check out “Silver Screen Romance”, “Counting The Days” and “Last Night”. Actually “Sex on the Radio” is really good too. Fuck, just listen to the whole thing. You can stream it on their MySpace. I’m so relieved. There hasn’t been an album out in awhile that I was really into.

Top 5 Bands I Can’t Get Enough of Right Now:

1. The Maine

Their latest album Black & White hits me in all the right ways. Some of the lyrics like “Soon enough girl you’re going to realize/That when the pretty boys try to get next to you,/They really just want to have sex with you” are just so full of reality, but in a fairly PC way.

2. Mayday Parade

I know a lot of fans had quite a few complaints with Anywhere But Here (2009). However, in my opinion, yeah, sure, the lyrics aren’t as morose or clever as their first 2 albums, but the music is just as good.

3. Canterbury

If you’re not from the UK, chances are you probably haven’t heard of them, but luckily I stumbled across them last year. There is just something about them…And they just released their newest single “Calm Down” today and you can watch the music video for it here.

4. There For Tomorrow

They just recently came through Denver, and they are one of those bands that you just have to see live. They’re pretty theatrical performers, and I always have a good time seeing them.

5. The White Tie Affair

Truth is, I just miss them. :(
